5 Ways to Make Room for Joy This Season

It’s the holiday season and while the world is still transforming, this is the last month of 2020 and many have already expressed excitement regarding the year’s departure. With all that’s going on, it’s not too late for you to change your perspective, gain peace and maintain joy.

5 Ways to Make Room for Joy

1. Start New Traditions

For most, this year’s celebrations will be slightly different from last year. It'll be more challenging to maintain family traditions if out of town family isn't traveling this year (thanks to Covid). Therefore, this can be the year to make new traditions. Plan to do something fun with your children this year, like making ugly Christmas sweaters or reading Christmas stories, playing games or plan a family video call with those who normally travel home for the holidays. Be sure to check out the Oprah magazine article for more suggestions.

2. Create Positive Expectations for Each Day

We have a tendency to build expectations for the future and bank on them. Then when things happen opposite of what we hoped, we become disappointed. This year has already presented a lot of uncertainty and distress. Instead of developing plans that may or may not happen, try expecting something positive like expecting to complete the first goal on your daily list. Be sure to check it off as completed because we also enjoy completing something everyday, that adds happiness to our lives.

3. Step Out of the Box

Do something harmlessly silly either alone or with someone else that will elicit laughter. For example, while walking through the mall or another public place instead of walking – skip like when you were kids. Or while you’re waiting in line, strike a pose. I bet you’ll be surprised by how it makes you feel.

4. Breathe, Manage Your Relaxation

Take 5 minutes each day to simply do nothing but focus on your breathing. As you do this, remember to initiate these actions: inhale like you are smelling roses and exhale like you’re blowing out candles. It can happen whatever time of day you choose. Breathing exercises benefit you by helping you relieve stress and reduce anxiety.

5. Keep a Gratitude Journal

Spend time in gratitude: Write 3 things for which your grateful - in a journal or someplace you’ll keep it. If you need to, it’s okay if you repeat them during the month. Keeping gratitude lists helps lower stress, can help boost your mood and is a private way to help you feel calmer.

Now, I challenge you to close your eyes and think about the last time you laughed so hard, you almost pee’d your pants. Go back as many years as you need to and as you reminisce, notice the change in your composure and the joy creeping into your heart.

I hope this was helpful and I hope your holidays are joyful.
